I’d have been a lot more appreciative if he hadn’t pushed me first." Cassandra Palmer ― Hunt the Moon by Karen Chance

Skinwalker by Faith Hunter

Skinwalker (Jane Yellowrock, #1) Skinwalker by Faith Hunter

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Synopsis:
A year ago Jane nearly lost her life taking down an entire blood family of deadly rogue vampires that preyed on the helpless local populace of an Appalachian town. Now, after months of recuperation, she’s back and ready to fight again. Except this time, she’s hired by those she’s trained to kill—vampires…

Jane Yellowrock is the last of her kind—a skinwalker of Cherokee descent who can turn into any creature she desires and hunts vampires for a living. Back from hiatus, she’s hired by Katherine Fontaneau, one of the oldest vampires in New Orleans and the madam of Katies’s Ladies, to hunt a powerful rogue vampire who’s killing other vamps.

Amidst a bordello full of real “ladies of the night,” and a hot Cajun biker with a panther tattoo who stirs her carnal desire, Jane must stay focused and complete her mission—or else the next skin she’ll need to save just may be her own…

My thoughts:
Skinwalker is the first novel in a new urban fantasy series by established fantasy writer Faith Hunter, author of the Rogue Mage series. Unlike the Rogue Mage books Skinwalker is set in current day America and follows the adventures of Jane Yellowrock, a vampire slaying Skinwalker who wants to collect the bounty to destroy a powerful rogue vampire that is terrorizing and killing both humans and his own kind in New Orleans.
What makes things interesting is that she is hired by those she has been trained to kill…vampires. In Skinwalker Jane Yellowrock, is the protagonist in the story, what makes Jane special is that she is no ordinary skinwalker, she shares her soul with Beast. She has two entities.
Jane Yellowrock is a Skinwalker that can shapeshift into any creature Jane is a Native American myth. Beast, Jane's other entity is a big cat, scent-orientated and predatory.
Jane is a strong, kickass, motorcycle-riding(keys are for sissies) heroine who knows how to fight and how to use her weapons. She's six feet tall and striking, especially when she's riding her motorcycle, Bitsa.
I like how there's a mixture of beings, Vampires, Witches, Skinwalkers, etc. And while romance doesn't play a primary role in this novel, it does include elements. It seems like just the amount and it could lead to more in the next edition. This book has great characters and dialogue. The plot is strong and interesting and I found myself guessing who the Rogue was right up until the end. It is a great mystery and I recommend this!

Also, this isn't the first story for Jane Yellowrock. There's a short story titled "Kit",with her and her friend Molly who is a witch. It's in the anthology Strange Brew.
Book 2 in the Jane Yellowrock series Blood Cross is scheduled for release in January, 2010! I'm going to buy it for sure.
